Therapy for Women in North Riverside, Illinois
Serving women in Broadview, Westchester, Brookfield, La Grange Park, Berwyn, Forest Park, Chicago, and throughout Illinois via telehealth.
It's rarely one moment that brings a woman to therapy. It's usually the weight of a hundred smaller ones. The mental load that never lets up. The feeling that you've been taking care of everyone else for so long, you're not sure what you actually need anymore. Somewhere along the way, you stopped being a priority, and you're starting to feel it.
At Shift Counseling, we meet women where they are. Whether you have a clear sense of what you're carrying or just a feeling that something needs to change, we can help you figure out the rest. We work with women navigating burnout, relationship stress, trauma, and everything in between. We offer in-person appointments at our North Riverside office and virtual therapy throughout Illinois.

Common Challenges We Help Women Navigate
Women come to therapy carrying a wide range of things — and often more than one at once. Here are some of the most common areas we work on together.
Anxiety, Depression & Trauma
You keep functioning, but something underneath is not okay. The worry is constant, the heaviness is real, and the experiences you have pushed through without fully processing are still quietly running the show.
Relationships & Life Transitions
You are the one who keeps everything together, which means your own needs are usually last. Add a major life shift into the mix and it gets even harder to know what you actually want versus what you have just learned to accept.
Work & Identity
You have worked hard to get here and yet you still feel like you are falling short or faking it. Underneath the busyness are real questions about what you want, what you inherited, and whether any of this is actually working for you.
These aren't small things — and they don't have to be permanent fixtures in your life. Therapy gives you a dedicated space to work through them with someone who actually knows how to help.
How Therapy for Women Works at Shift Counseling
Before any skills work begins, the first step is feeling genuinely heard. Our therapists create a space where you can talk about what is actually going on without fear of judgment or dismissal. For a lot of women, having someone truly listen without an agenda is something they have not had in a long time. That foundation is what makes the rest of the work possible.
Our Approach
-
Terapia cognitivo-conductual
Helps you identify the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Useful for breaking negative patterns tied to anxiety, depression, self-doubt, and relationship stress.
-
Terapia EMDR
Helps reprocess difficult memories so they no longer carry the same emotional weight. Especially relevant for trauma tied to abuse, loss, or other experiences that have stayed with you.
-
PolyVagal-Informed Therapy
Integrates an understanding of how the nervous system responds to stress and past experiences, building practical skills for feeling safer and more grounded in daily life.
Therapy at Shift Counseling is not just about talking things through. Once the relationship is established, the work becomes practical. You will leave with real skills, not just ways to cope, but ways to actually change.
Set boundaries without guilt or over-explanation. Many women have spent years putting everyone else first. Therapy helps you figure out what you actually need and gives you the confidence to stand behind it.
Build a healthier relationship with your body and your own inner voice. Self-criticism has a way of becoming background noise. Therapy helps you notice it, understand where it came from, and gradually replace it with something more honest and kind.
Process the experiences that have kept you stuck. Some things do not just fade with time. EMDR and trauma-informed work help you move through them in a way that talking alone often cannot.
Break the cycle of perfectionism and chronic overgiving. These are usually patterns that were learned, not chosen. Understanding where they come from is the first step toward actually changing them.
Come back to yourself. A clearer sense of who you are, what you want, and the confidence to act on it.
We celebrate your wins, help you problem-solve when you get stuck, and hold you accountable to the changes you want to make. Our goal is for you to feel confident and self-sufficient when you are done. We are not here to create dependency. We are here to give you the tools to navigate your life without us.
What Shifts When You Finally Put Yourself First
Reconocer cuándo es el momento de buscar ayuda
Sometimes you know exactly what's wrong. Other times it's more of a slow drift, where things pile up quietly until one day you just don't feel like yourself anymore. Both are valid reasons to reach out.
Some of what women describe when they come to us
Going through the motions without really being present
Overthinking everything and struggling to quiet your mind
Mood swings, emotional numbness, or a short fuse that wasn't there before
Persistent guilt, shame, or self-criticism you can't seem to shake
Changes in sleep or appetite that have quietly become your new normal
Body tension, headaches, or fatigue that rest doesn't fix
Some of the patterns that brought them there
Withdrawing from people or activities that used to feel good
People pleasing and Superwoman Syndrome that leaves you running on empty
Difficulty saying no without feeling guilty or owing someone an explanation
Perfectionism and expectations you can never quite seem to meet
Coping habits that get you through the day but don't actually help
If you were reading that list and something stopped you mid-scroll, that feeling is real and it matters. And if none of it quite fits, that's okay too. There's no checklist you have to match to deserve support. If something has felt off and you've been sitting with it, that's enough to reach out.
Meet the Therapists Who Work with Women
Our therapists bring real clinical experience to the issues women face, including trauma, anxiety, and the kind of cumulative stress that builds up when you've been managing everything for too long. Many of our clients find it meaningful to work with a therapist who understands the pressures women navigate, not just clinically, but in a real, grounded way. Our team includes both female and male therapists who work with women regularly, and you can always request a preference when you reach out.
Vivian Estrada and Noel Cordova are bilingual counselors who provide therapy in both English and Spanish.

FAQs

Our female therapists understand many of the pressures and expectations women face, not just clinically, but in a way that comes from a genuine understanding of how gender, culture, and society intersect to create unique challenges. Many women find it easier to open up about sensitive topics, body image, relationships, identity, and family pressure, with a therapist who gets that context without needing it explained. That said, our male therapists also work with women regularly and bring their own valuable perspective to the work.
-
No. Some women come in knowing exactly what they want to work on. Others come in feeling off and not quite sure why. Both are completely fine starting points. Your therapist will help you figure out what's going on and where to focus.
-
Often, yes. Issues like anxiety, depression, and unresolved trauma frequently show up in how we communicate and connect with others. Therapy can help you build self-awareness, identify patterns that keep causing friction, and develop more effective ways of navigating relationships.
-
Not at all. Some women prefer working with a female therapist and some don't have a preference. We have both female and male therapists on staff who work with women regularly. You can request a preference when you reach out and we'll do our best to match you accordingly.
-
Sessions typically range from $75 to $200 without insurance. With in-network coverage, you may only be responsible for a copay of $10 to $50 per session. Shift Counseling is in-network with BCBS PPO, Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, and Lyra. We can give you an estimate of your benefits when you call to schedule.
-
Our therapists are licensed mental health professionals, including a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors (LCPC), with specific training and experience working with women. They use evidence-based approaches and stay current with research in areas like trauma and anxiety treatment.
-
That depends on what you're working on. Some issues respond well to a shorter, focused approach. Others benefit from longer-term support. Your therapist will discuss what makes sense for your goals, and you can always reassess as things progress.
-
Yes. Everything shared in therapy is private. There are limited legal exceptions, such as situations involving risk of serious harm, and your therapist will explain those at the start of treatment.
-
A bad fit or the wrong approach can make therapy feel pointless. It doesn't mean therapy itself doesn't work for you. We offer a free consultation specifically so you can get a sense of the therapist and the approach before committing to sessions. Therapist fit matters, and we take that seriously.
