Anxiety Therapy in North Riverside, Illinois

Serving people with anxiety, panic attacks, and social fear in Broadview, Westchester, Brookfield, La Grange Park, Berwyn, Forest Park, Chicago, and throughout Illinois via telehealth.

You're Not Falling Apart. But Something Isn't Right.

Maybe you're exhausted but can't sleep, or you're snapping at people you love for reasons that don't quite make sense. You replay conversations from three days ago, picking apart what you said and what you should have said instead. You've started avoiding things, quietly, in ways you haven't fully admitted to yourself.

That's anxiety. Not dramatic, not always obvious, but persistent. And it tends to get louder the longer it goes unaddressed.

At Shift Counseling, PC, our anxiety therapists bring specialized training and a genuine understanding of what chronic anxiety actually feels like, not just what it looks like on a checklist. Whether you're in the thick of it or just starting to notice the pattern, we're here to help you figure out what's going on and what to do about it.

In-person at our North Riverside office and virtually throughout Illinois, we help you develop the tools and understanding to manage anxiety effectively.

Signs of Anxiety We Address

Anxiety shows up differently for everyone. Some of these will sound familiar. Some might surprise you.

  • Chronic excessive worry that jumps from topic to topic

  • Panic attacks with intense physical symptoms (racing heart, difficulty breathing, chest pain)

  • Fear of social situations, criticism, or being judged

  • Overthinking and rumination, especially at night

  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering things

  • Catastrophizing and expecting the worst possible outcome

  • Physical tension, headaches, and muscle tightness

  • Sleep disruption, fatigue, and restlessness

  • Gastrointestinal issues like nausea or stomach discomfort

  • Feeling disconnected from reality (dissociation)

  • Avoidance of situations that trigger anxiety

  • Irritability and feeling constantly on edge

If several of these feel familiar, you're in the right place. These are exactly the kinds of experiences our therapists work with every day, and they respond well to treatment.

How Anxiety Therapy Works at Shift Counseling

What to Expect

Your first session is about getting to know you. Your therapist will ask questions, listen, and give you space to share what's been going on. From there, you'll build a personalized treatment plan together based on your specific symptoms and goals. Progress gets tracked throughout, and the plan adjusts as needed. Most clients start noticing some relief within 6-8 sessions, though comprehensive treatment typically runs 3-6 months. Some people need less time, while others prefer ongoing support.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Identifies and challenges the anxious thoughts fueling your symptoms, while building practical coping strategies you can use in real life.

Our Approach to Anxiety Treatment

We primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the gold standard for anxiety disorder treatment. CBT helps you identify and challenge the anxious thoughts that fuel your symptoms while developing practical coping strategies you can use in real life. Because anxiety produces intense physical symptoms, we also incorporate body-based approaches into our work.

The Three Most Common Anxiety Disorders We Treat

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Persistent worry, overthinking, physical tension that won't quit.

GAD isn't just being stressed. It's a mind that won't stop scanning for problems, even when nothing is actually wrong. You worry about multiple things at once, the thoughts jump from topic to topic, and your body carries the tension of it all. Sleep is hard. Concentration is hard. Relaxing feels almost impossible. Our therapists help you understand what's driving the worry cycle and build practical strategies to interrupt it.

  • Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder

Sudden, intense episodes that feel like a medical emergency.

If you've had a panic attack, you know it's not just being anxious. Your heart races, breathing becomes difficult, and you may feel chest pain, nausea, or a terrifying sense that something is seriously wrong. One of the most challenging parts of panic disorder is what happens between attacks: the constant, exhausting fear of when the next one will hit. We help you understand your triggers and rebuild a sense of safety in your own body.

  • Social Anxiety

Fear of judgment, humiliation, or saying the wrong thing.

Social anxiety is more than shyness. It's walking into a room and immediately scanning for how people are perceiving you. It's replaying a conversation hours later, convinced you said something wrong. It's avoiding situations you actually want to be part of because the dread beforehand isn't worth it. Our social anxiety therapy combines cognitive work with gradual exposure to help you reconnect with people and situations you've been avoiding.

Is Anxiety Therapy Right for You?

People come to anxiety therapy from all different places. Some have been struggling for years. Others noticed something shift recently. What they share is a sense that anxiety is getting in the way of how they want to live, and a readiness to do something about it. Anxiety therapy might be right for you if:

  • You experience persistent worry, panic, or fear that interferes with your daily life

  • You're avoiding situations because of anxiety

  • Physical anxiety symptoms (tension, racing heart, stomach issues) are affecting you

  • Anxiety has been a pattern in your life, not just a passing moment of stress

  • You want to understand your anxiety better and develop new skills

  • You're interested in addressing root causes, not just managing symptoms in the moment

Starting therapy can bring up uncertainty, and that's a reasonable response. What we know is that anxiety is one of the most treatable conditions there is, and the approach, the fit, and the timing all matter. If something hasn't worked before, that's worth talking through.

Reach out when you're ready. A free consultation is a straightforward conversation about what's going on and whether we're the right fit.

FAQs

  • Many clients notice relief within 6-8 sessions. Comprehensive treatment typically runs 3-6 months of weekly sessions, though some people benefit from shorter-term work and others prefer ongoing support. Your therapist will set clear goals with you and track progress throughout.

  • We primarily use CBT, the gold standard for anxiety treatment, combined with PolyVagal Therapy, a body-based approach for understanding nervous system triggers and developing somatic tools for self-regulation. Sessions may also include mindfulness, deep breathing, cognitive reframing, and gradual exposure for social anxiety. When trauma contributes to anxiety, we incorporate EMDR.

  • Vivian Estrada is an LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor), and Noel Cordova is an LCPC and CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor). All are licensed mental health professionals with specialized training in anxiety disorders and evidence-based treatment approaches.

  • Without insurance, sessions typically range from $75 to $200. With in-network coverage, your cost may be as low as a $10 to $50 copay. Shift Counseling is in-network with BCBS PPO, Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, and Lyra. Call to schedule and we can provide an estimate of your specific benefits before your first appointment.

  • Yes. Anxiety therapy is effective for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety, and trauma-related anxiety. If we determine that you need specialized treatment we don't provide, such as intensive exposure and response prevention for OCD or specific phobia treatment, we'll help connect you with a therapist who offers that specific care.

  • Yes. We offer both in-person sessions at our North Riverside office and virtual therapy throughout Illinois, including Broadview, Westchester, Brookfield, La Grange Park, Berwyn, Forest Park, and Chicago. Many clients find virtual anxiety therapy just as effective and more convenient.

  • Skepticism is common and doesn't mean therapy won't help. If it hasn't worked before, the approach, the therapist, or the timing may not have been right. Those things matter. A free consultation is a low-risk way to find out.

  • Keep it simple and honest. Let them know they're going to talk to someone who helps people work through anxiety, that nothing they say will get them in trouble, and that the therapist isn't there to fix them or report back to you on everything. If they're nervous, that's normal and worth saying out loud. The first session is mostly just getting to know each other. They won't be pushed to talk about anything they're not ready for.

  • Yes. What you share in therapy is confidential. Limited exceptions apply, such as immediate safety concerns or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. Your therapist will explain those limits during your first session.

  • Managing anxiety alone often means relying on avoidance, which reduces anxiety temporarily but reinforces it over time. Anxiety therapy addresses both the thoughts and the physical sensations driving your symptoms. You'll learn skills that actually work, practice them with guidance, and build confidence through the process rather than around it.

  • A friend listens. A therapist helps you identify patterns you can't see from the inside, teaches you specific skills, and guides a structured process with real goals. Friendship is valuable. Therapy is different.

  • Therapy and medication work well together. Keep taking any prescribed medication and let your therapist know. We can coordinate with your prescribing doctor as part of your overall care.

  • We see clients by appointment only. Please provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Missed sessions without 24-hour notice are subject to a $50 fee.
