Adolescence is a time of unprecedented physical, emotional, and social change. Teenagers today navigate academic pressures, complex social dynamics, identity formation, and the journey toward independence. How Teen Therapy Works at Shift Counseling

Our qualified teen therapists understand the delicate balance between providing support and fostering independence. We create a safe, non-judgmental space where teenagers feel heard, understood, and empowered to make positive changes.

What to Expect:

We offer both in-person appointments and secure virtual sessions throughout Illinois. Sessions are typically weekly and last 50-60 minutes. The initial session focuses on building rapport and understanding your teenager's concerns.

The therapist will also explain confidentiality rules and what to expect from the therapeutic process. Parents are often included for part of the first session, though the teen will also have private time with the therapist to build trust and autonomy.

The Importance of Specialized Training

Working effectively with teenagers requires specialized training beyond general mental health education.

We're committed to ongoing professional development to stay current with evolving research and best practices in adolescent mental health.

  • Adolescent development and teenage brain science

  • Family systems and parent-teen dynamics

  • Trauma-informed care for young people

  • Legal and ethical considerations when working with minors (confidentiality, mandated reporting)

Is Teen Therapy Right for Your Family?

Teen therapy can be helpful even without a formal diagnosis. Many families reach out because their teen seems withdrawn or struggling where they used to thrive.

Many teens are hesitant about therapy at first — that's completely normal. We recommend trying at least 3 sessions to allow your teen time to build trust.

If you're unsure whether teen therapy is the right next step, we offer a free consultation where we can discuss what your teen is going through and answer your questions about the process.

Teen therapy might be right for your family if:

  • Your teen is struggling emotionally, academically, or socially

  • Communication at home has become difficult

  • Your teen has experienced trauma, loss, or a major life change

  • You've noticed changes in sleep, appetite, grades, or friendships

  • Your teen wants to talk to someone outside the family

  • You want to give your teen tools before problems grow

If we're a match, we'll get your teen’s first appointment on the calendar. Choose between in-person sessions at our North Riverside office or virtual sessions from anywhere in Illinois. If you're already confident we're the right fit, you can skip the consultation and book directly.
