Individual Therapy for Anxiety, Depression, and Stress

Hi, I'm Patrick Rossi, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Shift Counseling, PC in North Riverside, Illinois. I work with men, women, teens, and young adults who are managing anxiety, depression, and the kind of stress that keeps piling up no matter how hard you try to stay on top of it.

I first became interested in therapy and social work when I was in school and noticed my peers struggling with their grades and school performance because of mental health issues, and watching that happen stuck with me. I also took a few community service courses, and that opened me up to the wider world of social work. From there, my interest in psychology and mental health took over and shaped the rest of my career.

If you're looking for a therapist who will help you build practical tools instead of just listening and nodding, that's exactly the work I do. I see clients in person at our North Riverside office and virtually throughout Illinois, with availability on Friday afternoons and Saturdays.

Who I Work With

I work with menwomen, teens, and young adults managing depression, anxiety, and the effects of trauma, along with parents trying to support a child who's struggling. Here's some of what we tend to work through together:

What you might be feeling

Anxiety, racing thoughts, and a nervous system that won't settle
Depression, low motivation, and feeling stuck
The lingering effects of a difficult or traumatic experience

What you're working on

Building distress tolerance and resilience, so setbacks cost you less each time
Assertive communication, boundary setting, and conflict resolution
Dissatisfaction in a relationship you want to work through on your own terms

Where it shows up

Loneliness, and wanting more meaningful connection even if you're not sure how to build it
Anger that's starting to cost you relationships or peace of mind
Stress spilling over from work, parenting, or everyday pressure

I also have firsthand experience with the pressures that come with teaching and healthcare work, having spent years inside those systems myself, so if that's the world you're navigating, you won't have to explain the basics.

You don't need a diagnosis or the right words ready. We'll figure out what's going on and build a plan from there.

Support for Parents Navigating a Child's Behavior or IEP/504 Plan

I spent over a decade as a school social worker, and that experience means I can offer something most therapists can't: direct support for parents who are trying to figure out what to do next.

If your teen already has an IEP or 504 plan, I can provide individual therapy that builds on what the school is already doing, rather than duplicating it.

I also meet with parents on their own, without their child in session, when a child's behavior has become a source of worry. Because I've worked inside the education and child treatment systems, not just alongside them, I can help you understand your options, whether that's a school-based intervention, a structured treatment program, or an outside evaluation, and coach you on how to advocate for your child, and yourself, within those systems.

My Path to Private Practice

I've spent most of my career inside schools, working directly with kids and families on everything from everyday stress to serious behavioral concerns. That's part of what I bring into the therapy room: a practical sense of what actually helps, and a working understanding of how schools and outside treatment can support each other instead of working against each other.

My Training and Background

  • Bachelor of Social Work, Aurora University, Aurora, IL, 2009

  • Master of Social Work, Aurora University, Aurora, IL, 2012

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Illinois, since 2019

  • School social worker since 2012

  • In private practice since 2024

What Makes My Approach Different

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) skills to help you notice the thought patterns that keep you stuck, and I put a lot of focus on building distress tolerance and resilience, so the hard moments cost you less over time.

Individual Therapy for Men

A lot of the men I work with come in for individual sessions because something specific finally pushed them to reach out: a relationship that feels off, anger starting to leak into places it doesn't belong, or a quiet loneliness even when people are around.

I work with motivated men on assertive communication, boundary setting, conflict resolution, and stress management, the kind of practical skills that tend to change how your relationships actually feel, not just how you talk about them.

One note on anger: I can help men who notice their anger is becoming a problem and want to work on it before it costs them something. This isn't a substitute for court-mandated anger management, so if you've been ordered into treatment, I won't be able to meet that requirement. But if you're getting ahead of it on your own terms, that's exactly where I can help.
